When woven fabrics are made from recycled PET, the first step is collecting used PET containers. Fabric manufacturers buy bales of recycled bottles from vendors or from municipal recycling projects - Essentially all the bottles you put in the recycling bin times 1000!

The bales of bottles are emptied onto a moving belt. They first sort the bottles by color, separating green ones from clear ones. Then they visually inspect each piece, and remove non-PET caps or bases, or any foreign objects, so that the final result is strictly PET bottles. The clean containers are then crushed into tiny chips. Chips from green bottles stay green, and become yarn that will be dyed a dark color.

At this point the process begins to be exactly like regular PET fabric manufacturing. The recycled plastic chips are emptied into a vat and heated, then forced through spinnerets just like virgin polyester would be. The produced thread is then woven into fabrics.

TIP: Hemp increases in absorbency over the first few washes, and most people find it reaches maximum absorbency after around 6-7 washes. It requires prewashing and you should wash and dry it the same way you will wash and dry it when it's a finished garment.

It comes in natural cream and is sold by the metre. The stretch is low to medium with good recovery.

When the hemp is thick enough the stalks are cut, tied in bundles and dried in the sun. A process that usually takes around 2 weeks. When the sap has dried the stalks are split and the fibres are separated into rough strips, ready for a good pounding to make them softer and more pliable.

After handspinning the yarn is ready for weaving. Being a bast fibre (a fibre from the stalk of the plant, not the fruit or flowers) hemp is rather stiff and hardwearing. It can absorb more moisture than cotton before feeling wet, and has natural anti-bacterial qualities.

The texture, natural colour and "starchiness" of handloomed hemp make it perfect for table runners, napkins, placemats, curtains, handbags, beachpants, cushion covers and curtains.

Hemp is most similar in properties to linen (another bast fibre also known as flax). It bleaches naturally in the sun and holds a crease well.

Hemp will shrink by around 5% so please pre-wash if you are using it for anything other than napery. Hemp gets softer with every wash.

Fabric Info; Linen fabrics are made with flax fibers. Both industrial hemp and flax plants are regarded as “golden fibers”, not just for their natural golden colour fibers, but more importantly, for their great properties. Their fibers are considered the strongest known to mankind next to silk. With high moisture absorbency, high heat conductivity, and excellent abrasion resistance, they can be made into beautiful, comfortable and long lasting clothes. The more you wash them, the softer they get.

Growing
The certified organic cotton in this fabric is sourced from India.

Certified organic cotton is farmed without the use of pesticides, genetically modified seed or synthetic fertilizers.

The soil is built up over the years to retain moisture and fungus enabling, in our case, the organic cotton to prosper on a dry land (non-irrigated) farm.

Ginning
Once the cotton is picked, the cotton is passed through a gin where the seeds and leaves from the plants are separated from the cotton fibre.

The gin is cleaned out of conventional cotton fibre prior to our organic cotton being processed. The ginned organic cotton is then packed into bales and each bale is tested by an independent body for its quality.

Spinning
The organic cotton lint is then transported to a spinning mill in where it is ring spun into yarn. Ring spinning is the highest quality spinning process. The certified organic cotton yarn we import from India is spun and certified by the the Control Union formerly SKAL.

Knitting
This fabric is knitted in Melbourne, Australia.
