These yarns include vegetarian banana silk yarns, rayon yarns and recycled sari silk yarns.
The banana silk and rayon yarns make great silk alternatives.
Our recycled sari silk yarns are available in a kaliedescope of colours and a range of gauges. These sari silk yarns are just the thing for original and colourful designs. Spun Silk - Soft & Light Recycled Silk (Earthy Purples)
This tussah silk knitting yarn is a cool and earthy combination of purples, greens and blues, with a few other random colours. It is a single ply yarn, closest to an 8 ply in gauge. Being spun from recycled fibres, rather than recycled threads or fabric strips it is very soft, with a high sheen, lofty hand and good drape.
The shorter length silk fibres (that were not spun into threads or woven into fabric) are gathered up and sent to Nepal, for handspinning into yarns by womens co-operatives. The resulting yarn is perfect for knitting, crochet or weaving.
Tussah silk is wild crafted – no silkworms are harmed in its production.
Some extra info;
This is a softer, higher quality spun fibre yarn than the riotous sari silk twist yarns you may have seen. Each skein is from 95 to 100g of 100% silk, approximately 37m and with 6mm needles approx 3 stitches per inch.

Sari Twist - the original recycled sari silk yarn
This 100% silk yarn is made from the scrap silk left over from the production of saris. Women’s co-operatives hand spin these silk remnants by drop spindle, chakra, or wheel. Each yarn is unique…varying in thickness and colour. These “sari twist” yarns are spun from silk fabric scraps, not individual silk fibres, so expect knobbles, twists, ties, and a bit of fuzz in your yarn! It is very wild and wooly.
This is the yarn that most people use to make handbags with, or accessory items. It is a lot stiffer and chunkier than the other silk yarns.
The finished masterpiece may be washed by hand or in a tied pillowcase on a cold, gentle cycle. Lay the item flat to dry – hanging a finished item up will stretch its shape. Yarns may be knitted, woven or used to embellish other projects. There is from 95 to 100g per skein, approximately 45m and with 10mm needles approx 2.5 stitches per inch.
Recycled Silk Ribbon Yarn - silk yarn for all crafters
Sold in 95 – 100 gram skeins this is recycling at its best. When the end wastes from silk sari production are cut off, they are scooped up and tied together, end to end to form a continuous length of fantastically coloured silk ribbon. Great for freeform knitting, embellishing, weaving, couching, crochet, macrame projects, hair ties, rag rugs etc, etc…..you WILL find a use for it!
This is not traditional ribbon with edging, but wild, scrappy, torn fabric remnants shimmering and shining, just waiting to be admired. The ribbon looks fantastic knitted into beanie brims as a feature row. I have also seen whole beanies knitted from this ribbon and they look great.
Fabric widths vary temendously but most are 2.5cm wide, with some up to 5cm. This is a yarn to have fun with. If you can’t knit, use it to wrap presents or tie your hair back with. There is approx 50 metres per skein.
Funky Fur - Himalaya Yarn with attitude and fuzz
This silk knitting yarn is a riot of colours. Individual silk sewing threads are recycled and sent to Nepal, for handspinning into yarns by womens co-operatives. The resulting yarn is soft to the touch, extremely colourful, hairy, and has a soft drape, perfect for knitting, couching or weaving.
To visualise this yarn imagine a bundle of embroidery threads spun together, with the individual threads lending it a soft yet hairy appearance.
There is a percentage or rayon and cotton mixed in with the silk. These fibres also have high comfort factors. It is very difficult to give an exact breakdown of content percentages as they are all so individual. This is part of the attraction. Even if you shared a pattern with a friend your end pieces would look entirely different.
This is one of our favourite yarns.
Some extra details;
There is from 95 to 100g per skein and approximately 37m, with approx 3 stitches per inch on 6mm needles.

Fired Rainbow Banana Silk (smoother & thinner)
This banana silk yarn is truly original. It is spun from shredded rayon waste, from clothing manufacture. The rayon originates from the non-fruiting variety of the banana palm musa textilus that is commonly known as manilla hemp or abaca. The colourways are similar, but every skein is original, as it is the shredded fabric scraps that are spun, it is not a custom dyed yarn.
This particular “colourway” is smoother and finner than the others, and still has the beauty and lustre of silk, without coming from a silk worm. They are made from a Banana palm fibre has been in use since the 16th century to make rope, cord and textiles. By soaking the leaves in water the pulp starts to break down, leaving the cellulose fibres. These are hand crushed to make them soft and pliable, ready for weaving into fabrics, or spinning into ropes. It is the fabric that has been rejected for textile use that is shredded and spun in to this yarn.
Some extra info;
